Lighting Diagrams – For Photographers – Atlanta Wedding Photographer

I get asked a lot of questions about my lighting like what I use, where I position my lights, etc. So I’ve put together a few diagrams just to show how I light my couples in different scenarios. Pictures are included  🙂

Courtney & Quintin – Outdoor Wedding Portrait

diagram-1---cq

This diagram shows how I lit Courtney and Quintin for one of their wedding portraits. I used a Godox AD200 (1/4 power, I believe) on a stand and positioned it camera left. I used the sun as backlight (it was around 7:30 and the sun was lower in the sky, which I love). I used my 70-200 Tamron lens. If you want to soften the light a bit, add a shoot through umbrella.

Rose – Indoor Bridal Portrait

For this diagram, I used one AD200 with a small beauty dish to light the bride for one of her portraits. This was done in a small room, so it really helped that my dish wasn’t huge. There is a white wall behind her, but the overhead lighting made it appear darker. I used my Nikon 35mm 1.8g lens.

Dana & Jason – Dramatic Indoor Lighting

diagram-3-djump

This planner for this wedding had a really cool and dramatic pose suggestion for this glamorous couple. I used 2 lights for this one, both are AD200’s with shoot-through umbrellas. One was placed camera right. The other was placed way in the back of the room (camera left, out of the frame) and pointed at the wall to bounce some light into the back of the scene. I used a Tamron 70-200 mm lens. This is one of my favorite images.

Courtney & Bridesmaids – Group Lighting In Small Spaces

diagram-4-cogroup

Courtney loved this room and really wanted to take her group photos with her girls right here. The only problem was that the room was super small (for group photos, at least). This is why the AD200’s are the perfect strobes. For situations like this, a small, portable, battery powered light is exactly what I needed. The Godox small reflector with soft diffuser attachment was used here just to soften the light a bit. It can be softened more with a softbox or shoot-through umbrella. The girls are standing just inches from the fake candles on the wall. I had to back them up in order to get everyone in the frame. The light is camera right. Shot with a Nikon 35mm lens.
